http://www.joystiq.com/2009/05/12/square-enix-pulls-the-trigger-on-chrono-trigger-fan-projects/ Yeah... wtf. D= What was SE trying to accomplish here? Were they trying to anger their fanbase? History shows that many of the most-loved video games are the ones whose developers encourage modification... not let the fans work on something for five years and kill it just before completion. This was an awful move on SE's part. >< |

Wow. I mean, I could really care less seeing as I don't care about Chrono nor the fanmade sequels, but still, seems pretty douchebag-ish of Square. |

well i mean i can see where their coming from, but i mean its just going to be a fan sequel. The thing i can see is that they don't want all the fans to get this, and that maybe they have a sequel in the works, I dont really know the game so idk, but that looks like what it might be |

The thing about this game is that it's widely considered SE's most neglected property. The last release the series saw, besides the DS port, was Chrono Cross back in 2000. While SE obviously has the legal right to kill the fan project, it's really bad PR to leave the franchise mostly alone for eight years, then deny the fans the right to make their own sequel. Especially since the project was five years in the making. It's quite unlikely a sequel is in the works, imo... Barely any of the original CT team works with Square anymore, as far as I know. But who knows. Edited by Lavos, May 13 2009, 08:22 PM.

I want Troy to share his $5 footlong with me.
|
Couldn't they just change the sprites, a bit of the story and legally be ok? SE can't do shit if they aren't using their property. Man, this makes them out to be total fags. |

Even if they did that, they're still using CT's engine, which is just as much SE's property as the sprites and storyline. For more details about how this went down, check the last few homepage updates at http://www.chronocompendium.com , as well as this discussion thread: http://www.chronocompendium.com/Forums/index.php/topic,7437.15.html You know, I'm beginning to wonder if Square actually has a case here. Personally, I think ROM modification falls under fair use... |

Monetarily, not at all. The hack was going to be released only as a patch, and it was to be distributed totally free of charge. The site running the project doesn't accept any donations nor do they have any ads. The whole thing was not-for-profit. |
